Many on the right tell me that Democrats were pro-slavery and pro-segregation (it was the right) | In 12 years, did the people of California suddenly switch ideologies with the people of Alabama or just the name/color of their parties? New York with Louisiana? I'm just trying to make the point that the southern RIGHT has ALWAYS been the southern RIGHT (looking at 1860 through 2020) | image tagged in party, switch, southern, right, change my mind | made w/ Imgflip meme maker

it's funny because republicans used to be considered liberal and democrats conservative but then at some point it just switched lol

Southern Democrats were never "liberal" or "progressive". That's the bottom line.

Think of it this way: The Republicans/Party of Lincoln during the Civil War was the party that WANTED bigger federal government able to tell states what to do (ie- abolish slavery) while the Democrats wanted to Keep America Great by limiting the federal government powers and maintain traditional ways of life and STATES RIGHTS. The states right, in this case, to maintain the institution of slavery.

I wanna put this on the main politics stream; I get that argument all the time on social media as well.

You’re only partially correct. But it’s not left or right politics at play here. It’s more what were Democrats liberal about and what Republicans were conservative about. Democrats always supported Jim Crow and Segregation until they didn’t. Republicans supported Abolition and Civil Rights until they didn’t.

Both parties have always played on the prejudices of people and a century after the Civil War, those scars remained in reflection of the Electoral College. Southern Racists that controlled most of the south didn’t stay there after suffering loss after loss. They branched out and moved away. Spreading their influence more in rural areas across the country rather than just the old Confederate South. Numerous changes in how the parties attempted to bridge that gap between rural and urban areas over the last fifty or sixty years, and the Supreme Court being liberal enough to allow Roe v Wade; birthed the newer dynamic.

Democrats and Republicans are basically against certain ideas and platforms that both balance the line between what should be a persons responsibility or a public limitation. Even their major platforms are corrupted to reflect their basic stances. Democrats want more control in regards to guns and birth. Republicans want more freedom in regards to religion and work.

Yet, Democrats also use to support Segregation and Slavery as a religious freedom. And Republicans use to champion Civil Rights until race mixing and homosexuals turned them away from it. Demanding they should get credit for their initial attempts at equality while ignoring the rampant inequality.

Negligence and obstructionism threaten the parties as they are today. They appear to be shifting again but not back to where they were but rather further left and right from their original positions. Today’s Teapublicans and Socialcrats argue about what is and isn’t reality. It is quite disturbing, to say the least.

No, I would not say the Republicans are denying their past but rather exploiting it as proof that they could never be as racist as their opposition often claims. The only thing they're denying is what has changed in the 150 years since then.

Ok so here is a little history, k bud. So in the Goldwater convention in 1964 the Republican Party started using the southern electoral strategy which is an electoral strategy in which you target white voters using racism and also that was the beginning of you guys being conservative, republicans did not condone the civil rights act in 1964. Hey bud, I didn’t mean to break your stupid f**king fact proof bubble but Democrats have liberal policies and republicans have conservative values. Also it’s not like that entire story was created by hyper left wing media it is just basic history, unless you are stupid both major political affiliations have accepted the fact that parties switched in 1964. Just make this clear for me, you talk about how you don’t accept liberal policies, so do you think that you are liberal because you have republicans beliefs. Did you pass eighth grade history?

Like Vice President Pence likes to say: you're entitled to your own opinions, but not to your own facts.

Well yes, and what evidence do you have that the republicans did a party switch? btw he wasn't the first person to say that and won't be the last.

Evidence? History books and articles. Maybe not the history you've read.

I've been a history nerd since I was like, 7 years old.... Of course, I had Christian conservative parents, so some of my schooling left some things out of the history books.

I'm guessing whatever proof I present will be dismissed as a bad source.

During the 1960s-1970s, only one democrat senator and two congressmen switched from democrat to republican and only 2 congressmen switched from democrat to republican. Hardly a whole party switch.

The party switch was a long and extremely complicated process over the course of decades; it culminated with being "officially" switched by around the late 1950s-early 1960s (around JFKs time), BEFORE those senators and congressmen you mentioned. For the most part, those examples you gave are individuals who switched AFTER the fact.

I trying to figure out what you mean that republicans are racist or that they became the party of the worker.
0 ups, 4y
Like my little David Duke example might show - there's a good chance that racists are more likely to vote Republican; that seemed to be the case in 1991. The parties have not switched back since 1991...

I think in the south they didn't care about party affiliation just if you supported racism or not. As time progressed however the south has become far more tolerant and less racist than it used to be.

No they are not because of you guys. There is systemic racism with the police industry, America is flooded with sexism and misogyny, when I was a kid I had to worry because of my sexuality and many kids today don’t feel comfortable in their own home and schools 40% gay youth were kicked out of their house for being gay. In this country there is sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, and xenophobia. There you go.
