It is something that has been done throughout the world and throughout most of our known history. Ancient Greek women bleached and powdered their hair to be fair-haired like Germanic slave girls. Muslim women used red hennas to have hair like Macedonian and Thrace ladies. French noblewomen of the 17th century used lightening powders to give themselves for a more Irish-like complexion. Ancient Chinese architects copied designs and styles from Siam, Vietnam and India. The idea for Scottish clan plaids was one borrowed from Rumanian families of the middle ages. So, who are modern people to claim it is a bad thing? As the saying goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

the reason people are against cultural appropriation is because they don't want one culture to override or take the meaning out of another, like how some white people wear hairstyles that are specifically from African cultures, and act like it's their own, because then the meaning will be taken out of something that was sacred or special.

I mean if you think about it what isn't culture appropriation? If you think about it American culture wouldn't even exist without it. We're a melting pot after all.

i know, right? with all the SJW's screaming at people for eating at a Chinese restaurant, it's impossible to try things from other cultures which is actually what gets people to appreciate the traditions of other countries and build a more tolerant world, if that makes sense.

Yup, this be truth.

having the U.S. become a melting pot isn't exactly a good thing.

It already is and always has been.

If the U.S. was a melting pot that would take the importance out of a lot of cultures and religions.

Yes, that's how American culture formed.

It either doesn't exist at all or is everywhere all the time. It is a concept adopted by intellectually bankrupt people who need a crutch because every argument they take a side on is one that is indefensible. Basically, losers use it to their perceived advantage.

Some people take it too far, like saying that if you’re not Mexican you can’t eat Mexican food.”

Mimmickry is a sincere form of flattery. I don't see where cultural appropriation goes wrong?
0 ups, 3y
Well, it CAN go wrong. In general, cultural appropriation means taking a concept from a different culture because you think it is a good concept - perhaps a better one than the equivalent concept of your own culture at least in some way. And there is nothing wrong with that. But some people have adopted concepts from other cultures to ridicule that other culture or to convince the natives to submit to the new rule (like the late Roman Empire did, for example). Many times it is difficult to tell those forms apart, especially after decades, centuries, or even millenia of mashing up cultures. In general I tend to err on the positive side and view most cultural appropriation as sincere, but there are certainly ways this can go wrong.

Cultural appropriation takes the meaning out of important things; and it ruins the point of them. while you might see something as flattery, other people will see it as you trying to turn their religion or traditions into some trend.

I think it's fine myself in general. The human race is multi-cultural, we will always exchange goods, ideas, recipes, and yes even beauty or fashion styling. I think it's quite natural actually. However, catering to someone's race as a way to exploit them is not favorable, as in Hillary Clinton saying she eats hot sauce on everything or whatever she said to all the latino community...that was just pandering votes but all politicians do that in some form or fashion. Also not okay is Spanky from The Little Rascals dressed in blackface declaring how much he liked watermelons to try and act like Buckwheat. But, I don't altogether have a problem with blackface, that skit and others like it were indicative of the time in that racism was rife in the world and largely accepted. Glad we have progressed (in a good way) since then.

"Cultural Appropriation" to me is just another word to victimize people and thus control them, so I don't care for the term or the way it's used these days. But, the practice of it I think is fine if done respectfully or innocently. As in, a non-asian kid that wants to be a ninja for Halloween...I mean come on, that's innocent. And fun. And cute.

Cultural approbation:

But on a more serious note, some of it is rude. But i think on a whole having many cultures is good. I’m not approving the meme above with the four ladies...that, that’s just creepy

There is no such thing. It is a made up concept that race batters use in lieu of the race card. It is essentially a preemptive race card. People who believe in cultural appropriation are not the brightest tools in the ol' toolshed.

it's not just people "using the race card". It's one dominant culture taking the meaning out of special parts of another culture.

the human condition is DOMINANCE and SUBMISSION governed only by FEAR!
