Trump has shattered so many Presidential norms himself that it would be especially ironic if he were able to benefit from this one.
There are good reasons not to.
He won’t just be “a former President” — he’ll be a billionaire tycoon with a budding media empire and a continued death-grip on the GOP, constitutionally eligible to run again and actually encouraged by the Republican base and the sycophants in his own Party to do so.
He’s not a “go gentle into that good night” kind of guy. Not a Nixon at all in that respect, who at least had the decency to resign and get out of politics for good when caught red-handed directing an election theft scandal.
He’s done incalculable and irreversible damage to our democracy already, so there are no good options here, but prosecuting him to the fullest extent of the law is the best thing we can do to try to put humpty-dumpy back together.
