If you are talking about more than one person, that would be appropriate to use "They". But in this situation, where he is clearly talking about only one person, you have to use Him or Her.

pronouns are just words used to replace nouns. Hence the name "proNOUN" you cannot use "they" to refer to only one person. They is a word to replace Mutable people, or the people.
