I think what we discover if we look back at history, or have lived long enough to witness history as it happens, is that those who want power claim those who are in power abuse their power, and they're usually right. Then predictably, once those on the outside get the power, they do the exact same types of things as those who were in power... the very same people they criticized for abuse of power.
Lather, rinse, repeat. Party affiliation is irrelevant.
