I just wanted to point out that I used the exact same painting in a meme before. It's hilarious, I'm so glad you found it. I prefer abstract art, just something I can stare at and try to make something out of it. Realistic art is still pretty cool, but I prefer abstract art. As for the second question, I really think anything can be art, it just depends on how the viewer looks at it.

This painting does come from an artist who is considered a kind of master, and his name is Karel Appel. Now this is the kind of painting I do personally not like, but of which I can still see a bit that some people do.

Now there's also a "painting" (I don't know the name of the artist) only containing one black square and its name "Het Zwarte Vierkant", which simply means "The black square" in Dutch... I've even heard of an artist who used his own shit to make "art", and makes loads of money with it, and then I think I'm just dumb for not coming up with that myself.

Now I am the grandson of a man who painted a lot, as well realistic, as abstract, and also some humorist works. I inherited three of this pictures when my grandfather died. None of those are abstract, but I have seen his abstract works and some of his abstract paintings are really beautiful. Just a pity I don't have them. Of course, as these were painted by a man I loved, but who is no longer with me, these works have a lot of sentimental value to me, so I must be honest on it that I am perhaps not the right man to judge his work.

Now art is more than just pictures. Music is also a form of art, as well as writing novels (the kind of art I deliver), and in some ways even a computer game can be an art form. In the end "art" is a subjective term. Some stuff I cannot even consider art, but some people do. What some people consider "music" may be considered "unbearable noise" by others.

To me abstract can be beautiful but also downright ugly. It really depends on how the work has been done. I am not sure I can describe what I like and don't like, but I mostly know it when I see it. To me abstract is not just dumping some colors together... Some work is required to make into a nice composition... But that's too vague, I guess...

Very well put! I can see your skills in writing. Don't see why you were downvoted for elucidating so well on the topic especially given this stream, I would think your response would be more valued. Personally I try to comment visually with memes, such low brow art though. I have spent time painting, many hours for a few years in between relationships, sometimes I think it can be a pure form of art as no words are necessary, but the meaning of visual art especially abstract expressionism can be lost where the viewer has no context. Such is life! Even still, what a wonderful way to spend a few hours, much better than surfing the internet or reading news. What a hypocrite I am....

I have never been a huge fan of either surrealist or abstract art (much prefer Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassicism and Romanticism). The exception being a few works by van Gogh as he had an astonishingly attractive way at blending cobalt and saffron hues.

As to what makes art art? That is a question probably cannot be adequately defined as it typically means something different to every individual. However, perhaps (just an attempt here), art may be defined as an individual's expression of feelings, insights and philosophy via a material venue?

I will say I don't personally find anything artistic in movements which exist solely to insult others (like used tampon frescoes and pee in a jar), or those stupid things passed off as art, such as the banana duct-taped to a wall. Insulting, disgusting and haphazardly thrown together junk might appeal to soul-less anarchist or snob. But the rest of us generally possess the depth of humanity to recognize art when we see, touch or hear it.

I'm not a fan of abstract art, but I do recognize it as art. Anything that a person can appreciate as beautiful in some regard can be considered art, but just as I appreciate realism and honesty in the real world, I also appreciate realism in art. Still lifes are my favorite art form, perfect captures of significant moments in time. I love the art of Norman Rockwell, as it captures instances of typical life as we all know it. I suppose if I was asked to name my favorite abstract artist it would be Van Gogh, although his art was not really abstract at all...but it was the meeting in the middle of abstract and still life, pointilism if I'm not mistaken. Starry Night is a classic. The novelty of Warhol's Campbell's Soup montage is also interesting enough to catch my attention, but it blows my mind that something like that can be inspiring, and definitely intriguing that I actually like a bunch of pictures of soup cans...because why?

Art is when society wants to live in a cave of ignorance. I mean generally speaking. Of course I enjoy art.
