Freedom itself? No, I don't think so. Freedom without consequences? Absolutely. Feel free to say or do whatever you want, but if it crosses the line of law then be prepared to accept the repercussions. If you say something offensive about somebody that they feel strongly enough about (in person) then you might just get your jaw relocated. The best practice of freedom is accompanied closely by good judgement and careful words and actions.

You know, some people make a peanut butter bbq sauce using Skippy? Never tried it myself. Could be damn good.

Never heard of that one before, but in the right context I could see how it would work. People cover turkeys in PB before deep frying them, thai peanut sauce is an incredibly savory and tangy sauce for different foods, and PB goes very well with bacon (as in the Elvis sandwich) so I'm not entirely disgusted by the idea...might just have to give it a try some time!

I have friends that went to Peru and they said that they had something similar to a guinea pig and that it was good. I'd eat one in the right setting...and then there's nutria, which are related and widely consumed in the southern states where they are spreading rampantly as an invasive species. Never had one of those either but I'm told they are also good.

Yeah, seen the episode of Andrew Zimmern's "Bizarre Foods" where they shoot the nutria at night for fun...don't even eat 'em...just for the sport of it...lol. Your friends probably had capybara. They're essentially dog-sized guinea pigs. I'd have no problem scarfing down some capybara, or nutria, for that matter.

Odd that Zimmern would go hunting with people and then not eat the catch...and yes now that you mention it that is what they said it was, I just couldn't remember the name of it. Cool!

Yes, very strange he would do that...but he made a point of saying that he would eat them and has no problem eating them, but he was strictly there for the sport and the realistic help he was providing by killing that very invasive rodent. They were smoking them left and right...like every few seconds.

My view on freedom is along the same lines as Thparky and Ricardo. You are free to practice freedom until it infringes on other peoples' freedom. Take smoking for example. You are free to smoke as much as you want on your own property, but if you go to someone else's property and they tell you to put it out, put it out.

The basis of a free country is that your freedom ends when it threatens other people's freedom.

True freedom means that you can do whatever you want. That would include stealing, raping, murdering, etc. I think we are all in agreement that doing that is despicable and should be banned, but then you don't have 100% freedom anymore, and thus the limit came.

Now freedom is a diamond with many facets. Freedom of action is merely one of them, and the easiest to explain the limits with. Freedom of trade is another facet. That one too has a limit, otherwise one strong party can devour all other parties technically forming a monopoly on everything. We don't want that, so there too freedom ends.

Freedom of religion is another facet. If that is 100% free then we should also allow religions that require human sacrifices.

Freedom of education is another, but that would also allow to raise our children with lies.

Freedom of opinion expression is another, however that would then also include racism or words that are even downright threatening. This is one of the hardest facets to explain in a few words, as the limits here and why they must be there, are for reasons that always go indirectly and people are not always willing to think ahead.

The bottom line should be that there is a limit to freedom, as there's a limit to everything. Without that limit the biggest enemy of freedom would be freedom itself. The trick is now, let people be free where you can, and deny the freedom where you must. Freedom is not an excuse to everything... Neither are any of its facets... unfortunately.

Think about it like you have a compass around you, and your limits potentially travel simultaneously in every direction (like in a plane) now when you meet with another person (or fly in the path of another plane), those circles interlock, it is not so much that your freedoms become limited, but now they have an area of interconnection with another (or potential for a fatal crash in the case of a plane). If your freedoms do not infringe the other, or if you're not forced to adapt your own freedoms to, unreasonably, accommodate the freedoms of another (or force a plane to redirect/be forced to redirect) there are no reasonable limits.

The issues always arise when an individual's freedoms are superseding someone else's, which is something we should be self-aware about, where issues arise. I do not think these freedoms should be legally, and/or politically compromised personally, but I think there has to be an understanding that you can become too selfish with your freedoms i.e. you intentionally, or otherwise, effect someone else's. in this situation there are consequences.

Going back to the plane, this is where air traffic control suggest both of you (not one) change course slightly to avoid a disaster. Those around you should maybe suggest, but not enforce, something similar. The crash and consequences of said crash will ultimately be down to you/the pilot however.

If you did whatever you wanted in the name of freedom, you could be hurting someone else and infringing on THEIR freedom.
So it's kind of like goldilocks finding where the right limits are.

Freedom on it’s own? No. Freedom with consequences? Yes!! If we were free to do ANYTHING then criminals, killers and people like that, wouldn’t get punished. We can do whatever we want WITHIN the set laws of the U.S.A. but, if someone were to break a law, they’d have to face the set consequences.
