Great meme, what you don't see is the fences- didn't look a lot different that Nazi concentration camps. My family knew two Japanese neighbor families who got sent to this camp in Wyoming. They were not provided adequate clothes, bedding or food, nearly froze to death, and starved. Our family was among many who sent care packages to them and tried to tend their farms. Many Japanese owned farms were given to German and Italian immigrants. no kidding.

Wouldn’t have won it without them. I think the Tuskegee airmen single handedly defeated the Luftwaffe didn’t they?

In WWII, the US was at war with Japan. Many Americans we’re “racist” toward the Japs. President at the time, Franklin D. Roosevelt felt the need to send all Japanese people, even those born in the US, citizens, etc., to these internment camps, where they weren’t treated very well. The idea was so that they couldn’t be terrorist or spy on the people. Doesn’t matter how you look at it, that’s what it’s about. I don’t think it was a good move, but I also don’t think that modern day democrats should really be blamed for it.

And the German and Italian immigrants took over the Japanese farms. True story.

In California after Pearl Harbor, people wanted to kill Japanese. Even the ones here. The level
of patriotism then was much higher than now. People were pissed and it was not safe for Japanese on the streets. They were sent their as much for protection and because they were suspected of having sympathies for their homeland and potential spies for Japan. There are many reasons for this and racism was certainly part of it. Unlike the German immigrants who had assimilated over time many of the Japanese were fairly new immmigrants and they tended to hold on to their Japanese heritage which raised suspicion. They were treated well at the camps but their freedoms were denied.

They were treated like shit in the camps. This internment camp was in Wyoming and the victims had to fight to not freeze to death. I knew some of them before they passed away. Their farms were taken from them, their homes and belongings, their livestock--everything. And when the war was over they got a kick in the ass and told to go home. Gotta love FDR, hell maybe send a boat load of Jews trying to flee Hitler back to Europe. Wait he did??!!!

I don’t care what you say comparing them to concentration camps is incorrect. The treatment in European or Soviet “concentration camps“ was an entirely different level from how the Japanese in camps were treated. Japanese were recruited out of the camps to fight for the country, not likely something you could do under extreme mistreatment and abuse.

They couldn't leave, they barely had enough to eat. They had to fend for themselves to stay warm. They weren't given a choice of which camps to go to, for example you couldn't ask to transfer to a camp where your family was. Work was not optional, it was required and at times forced. They did not receive pay for their work, or even a stipend. In most cases they were released pennyless. Granted not a death camp, but not much different in some respects than a Soviet Gulag.
And recruited out of camps? That's something I've never read, can you recall where you found that, I'd sincerely be interested in reading about it as a history nut. Navajos were actively recruited as Code Talkers- the only military code never cracked to this day. In fact Navajos were pretty patriotic and recognized the worldwide dangers that were present, they enlisted in astonishing numbers relative to their small population.

Just scrolled back up to the picture and wanted to add one more thing. These interred Japanese were very peaceful people, orderly and cooperative, and they were patriotic American citizens. A bayonet like that one is hardly for the safety of the detainees.

A lot of them were little kids and women, I guess that would be reason enough for bayonets. Potential sneaky enemies and all.

It was war, a World War! and it was a military operation. We had been surprise attacked and it was devastating! It wiped out our pacific fleet! There was very real fear of attacks on the west coast. Japanese submarines fired on the mainland in California. I am repeatedly astonished that people pretend history happened in real time and with the same level belief as right now. Context of the times is totally ignored and that’s just ignorant.

I'm not a critic of participants of history being driven by the moment the live in, been there myself a time or two, but FDR did have a pretty consistent record of racist and bigoted actions. Nazi Death camps were more than a rumor when he sent that ship of Jewish refugees back to Germany. Let them cruise along the whole east coast from Florida to Maine for days first. Cancel culture is attacking what they believe to be right wingers first, so I take every opportunity to try to set the record straight. Won't be long though and there won't be any record. I'm sure not all of the internment camps were as bad as the ones I got first person accounts of.

Look I’m not saying it was a summer camp but it wasn’t a death camp either. It’s easy to look back on events with the advantage of 80 years of study and hindsight and condemn the actions. Their constitutional rights were violated. In times of emergency as we have seen government doesn’t always react properly. That doesn’t discount that the fear that generated the decisions can not be understood. There was real threat of Japanese attacks on the West Coast at the time. We may find 80 years from now that the mask mandates and shutdown of the economy are not seen in a favorable light either.

Look up the 442nd Regiment. One of the most decorated units in World War 2. It was made up of Japanese citizens of Hawaii who were curiously not interred. The others came from the internment camps on the mainland. A prominent long serving democratic Senator From Hawaii was a member.

OMG they had to endure seeing a military guard with a bayonet. Tell that to a Jew from auschwitz or a pole murdered by Stalin.

I just think of the shudder that went down my spine at the Gettysburg Museum in the bayonet display. If you know war history, you know the battles that were turned by the order to "fix bayonets!" There are also two bullets fused tip to tip, wonder what happened to those two guys after they pulled the trigger.

It's this weird conservative logic that keeps coming up again and again.

The idea is that since a Democratic president once used to violate human rights with internment camps, Democrats today should accept the current Republican president doing the same thing.

For some reason, the idea that NEITHER of them should have done this is not an option to these people.

Think of it like this - RAK13 isn't actually trying to change anyone's minds (it wouldn't, it makes no sense) - what he's trying to do is elicit high fives and upvotes from people who are ok with internment camps for minorities. (Ironically, they call that a "virtue signal" when they see someone else using the same technique)

I did say "neither one should have done that" which is the very definition of a consistent standard, didn't I?
