It only needs to be a probkem in places where the voting is close

All the more reason to keep the electoral college. If we were just using the "popular vote" then a bad actor could flood the system with bogus ballots one time.

Under the EC, however, they would have to try to tip the counts in enough battleground states in order to get a majority. Much harder to pull off.

The electoral college is one of the last remaining treasures of our federal system which gives the states a seat at the national table.
