I agree we need to defund the police, and replace them with locally elected sheriffs with appointed deputies.

Federals are usually local, just working for a different part of the government. ICE, Federal police working in federal buildings, airport security, homeland security etc...Unless there's a call for out-of-staters due to demand, the local federal agents can handle most anything that pops up.

They aren't accountable to the local government. They are accountable to the federal government and the UN in the case of UN peace keeping troops (which is one option to replace local law enforcement).

Not being accountable to local authorities is kind of the point. If the local authorities are allowing crimes to continue, what recourse do the people have? These local authorities are putting people's safety in their own hands, then charging them for not doing it properly, in the case of the Missouri couple. Also, "supposedly" these federal agents are kept in check by their own jurisdictional boundaries. They can't just go around the city arresting people unless it is part of an investigation within their jurisdiction...say chasing down someone who vandalized a government building for instance.
