It took 61 years to find a vaccine for polio. But that was 100 years ago. Today, it is estimated that a Coronavirus vaccine could be created anywhere between 10-18 years. The best bet is public cooperation and accurate awareness to avoid millions of deaths.
With time, assuming people use basic hygiene, wear masks, limit public exposure, and practice social distancing, it may run it's course within a year or less. Unfortunately, we live in a very politically charged society, if not world, that is increasingly untrusting of medical experts and scientists because they do not always have immediate answers and can even get things wrong.
People still don't understand that scientists can only report their observations and make educated guesses but that doesn't mean their advice isn't good or worthless.
