I am not a fan of it, but there is a need for it. In one thing opposers of abortion are right. Strictly speaking you are murdering an unborn child.

What they often forget is the circumstances in which the choice is made. People who are facing the choice to go for abortion or not have gone through a terrible time mostly. Do you want to force a woman who has been raped to carry the child she got as a result? Also note that for the kid being kept alive can also have gruesome consequences. It's not a happy thought to know you came to be out of raping. Of course some children can handle this better than others. Also note the age of the mother. Is a 14 years old girl able to bear the responsibility of being a mother? Of course you can easily say that if you have sex, this can be the consequence but that's too easy. And no sex before marriage is a bit of a hypocrite point of view the number of people still a virgin when marrying is very very low. When people feel sexually attracted, things happen, and it would be unnatural to try to prevent that. And birth control stuff does not always work. Also medical issues can also be a reason to go into this. Sometimes pregnancy can threaten a mother's life as a result to this, and when the mother dies the child is lost anyway, and will die soon after, if not immediately. Sometimes during pregnancy some diseases can be detected that will guarantee a horrible life for a kid. All in all, a lot of stuff comes into play when people are facing the decision to abort pregnancy or not.

Many people think that just because a woman wants to be boss over her own belly makes her decide to go into abortion very easily, but that is rarely the case. Many parents of aborted children can feel guilt over their decision for the rest of their lives. Even when they get children later in life and decide to keep them.

I therefore am sickened by the idea of protestors harassing people entering abortion clinics. They have no clue at all what was the reason behind the decision for abortion, and those who already made the decision are troubled enough the way they are. The last thing they need is another trauma because of some ignorant people trying to oppress their "opinion" based on their ignorance on them. Laws of free speech my ass. Your freedom always ends when it threatens the freedom of others. This includes ALL forms of freedom including freedom of speech. Something people who are full of "freedom" always forget.

👏👏👏 Great speech. This is where I am confused. There’s two sides of me. One is “ No exceptions, abortion is murder and murder is wrong”, but the other side is “It’s not that simple”. I’ve gone through a lot of bullshit in my life so I can understand the concept of circumstances. Pro-Lifers can be bigots, and Pro-Choicers might as well be criminals. The sad part is that there’s no middle ground. But yes, thank you for putting so much time into your answer.

Any time.... There are some things in life in which whatever you do is always wrong, but in the end you must make a choice what to do. Abortion is one of those things in which it's hard to take a full position.

YES. Like I said, there’s no middle ground.

For anyone who'd like to respond, I ask this question in response to the meme: "When is it ok to end a human life, legally and without malice?" When you answer, be prepared with the definition of human life, and before responding please consider that many laws in the past (Jim Crow, women's rights, etc.) have been overturned in favor of civil rights and morality. Just because it is law, does not make it moral or acceptable, it just means you cannot be charged with a crime. Also, please note that I say "human life", not "baby, child, fetus, embryo, etc." If anyone wishes to discuss this with me, you will find my answer to the original question regarding abortion in the responses I give.

Great post, some of the best discussions that have occurred in the Think Tank have been with regards to this topic, and I've seen many productive dialogues happen as long as those engaged can remain respectful.

*deep breaths* I still want to talk about this...I dont know..please dont be mad at me...

Human life is a delicate thing, but I think something really only counts as alive when it can support itself, so for me, something would really only be alive once it's born. I think abortion should be legal, dad.

Hey, I ain't mad, it's a deep topic and it's all over the news because no one can agree on it. You're allowed to have your own opinion!

So, a classic example of human life using your definition (and yes, this is commonly used in this exact context of the subject) is a person who is in a coma on life support. Their own body cannot sustain itself, but are they not alive? They have been born at this point, so what does that do to your interpretation?

I'm glad you are still thinking about this subject, the hard topics are the ones that only those capable of truly intelligent thought even try to take on seriously, you have always been respectful so just maintain that and you'll be surprised at how much you can learn not only about the topic in question but also about those you are talking to.

(Oh really? I didnt know that) I...I'm going to sound really cruel with this response, but with the person on life support, unless theres a good chance that they will wake up and be the same as how they were before the accident that made them like that happen, then I would rather the plug be pulled becuase...thats not living. Laying down in a bed, having to be monitored constantly...being a vegetable...thats not living.

Oh, really? I thought you might snap at me and tell me to let it go and not dwell on things. But, thank you dad, I want to try to be the best I can be, and I dont want to hurt anyone. After all, I wouldt want to be snapped at, and treat others the way you want to be treated, right?

Are you right in the head? Don't you forget that there's a difference between people on life support and babies. Babies have the potential to live and grow and become people in this world. People that can change it and have the potential to make it better

But you're taking it away

You're only saying all this because you're sorry for yourself

I never said that. What I was trying to say is that it shouldnt be help up to the same status as murder. It should be a whole new class of kiling-something-that-has-the-potential-to-be-alive.

I gotcha. And you should know me by now, I don't snap at people much unless you're just being ignorant, and even then I usually just let ignorant be as ignorant is.

While I don't agree with it personally (we don't have to agree, that's the beauty of human independence!), I see your point. However, let's again get into what a human life is. I'll define it as I see it, and you let me know what you think. Unlike many things there are not many good actual definitions of "human life" out there for everyone to agree on. I think that once sperm joins egg and the DNA fuses together, and a zygote forms, that zygote becomes two cells, then two cells become 4 cells, 4 cells become 8 cells, so on and so forth. That cell division happens of it's own accord, and the DNA within those cells is unique. The process is sustained by the mother, yes, but the mother is not directly causing those cells to divide and grow. It happens on its own. To me, that is the definition of a unique human life - a formation of cells with unique DNA that grows through a process completely independent of outside influence.

Would you agree or disagree with any or all of this definition?

Also, how are you doing these days? I haven't been online much recently so haven't been keeping up as much, hope I haven't missed anything good :)
[deleted]
2 ups, 4y,

I agree and disagree. I know what you mean, how the cells are sustained by the mother, but she is not directly causing it, but like you said, it needs to be sustained by the mother. By that, if the organism cant sustain itself outside of the mother's body, then by my definition, it is not yet alive.
2 ups, 4y,
1 reply
A baby can't sustain itself either, the mother has to feed it and care for it just as it was within the womb, only a little more detached ;)

Like I said, we dont have to agree! Just keep thinking about the hard stuff, it'll make you stronger! Love ya chica.
