Repurposing something helps that the history behind it to be forgotten. I think the history behind the statues is exactly why they should be kept, not as monuments, but as reminders.
Also, there is there a movement to remove non-Confederate statues. Abolitionist's statues have been vandalized just because they are white men. Most of the vandals know nothing about history in the first place.
