Aldous Huxley | "THE PERFECT DICTATORSHIP WOULD HAVE THE APPEARANCE OF A DEMOCRACY, BUT WOULD BASICALLY BE A PRISON WITHOUT WALLS IN WHICH THE PRISONERS WOULD NOT EVEN DREAM OF ESCAPING. Because if there's one thing that slavery was known for, it was the provision of entertainment and the ability to buy shit with their own money.

Yeah and the illusion of freedom.

See, again, actual slavery is known for being very clear that there is no freedom.

how is it that being very clear that there is no freedom is the actual slavery?

Read literally any eyewitness account of conditions in the actual slave trade, past or present. Slave owners do not and never have made a song and dance about building an illusion of freedom. Quite the opposite: when you're a slave, you're reminded of it in brutal ways every second of the day for your entire life.

I think the point is, the slaves in Brave New World don't realize they're slaves.

Just because it's profound commentary on the cultural impact of mass industrialization, doesn't mean there isn't some white boy nonsense in there sometimes.
1 up, 4y
White boy nonsense? Maybe an actual slave from today can write about their muslim slaveowners and experience?

What's the problem? Not enough tranny f**king in there, huh you degenerate?

Have you actually read Brave New World?

All of your comments remind me of the movie "They Live" Slaves are not aware of the reality and imagine if everyone had glasses which reflected the true version of the world, there would still be people who would refuse to see it.
1 up, 4y
There is no 'true version of the world'.

If you're talking about the kind of conditioning Huxley was referring to, that wouldn't involve a society where people are free to question the status quo, let alone on meme sites, it wouldn't even involve a society where anyone wanted to.

"The slaves would love their servitudes"

If you are suggesting that that is the state of affairs we currently have, do you not realise that your criticism disproves your meme? Unless you think you're one of a chosen few, able to see what's happening...

The closest thing to what Huxley is describing is capitalism.

People are free as far as they want people to be. Youtube and other platforms delete comments/videos without any explanation, just because they don't want them to reach to people. They sabotage some opinions discreetly and people are free as long as they don't cross the lines they draw. I believe this quote does not only refer to capitalism, and yet you can interpret it as capitalism as well.

Oh my God, do you value your own worth as a person so little that what you can write on the comments section of YouTube defines how much freedom you have?

I gave this example because JRBobDobbs tmentioned meme sites. I never restricted the perception to a social media app. Therefore your implication is pointless.

It was the only example you gave!

I referenced meme sites because you are using your freedom of speech to complain about having your freedom of speech restricted, on a meme site.

Oh trust me, I wasn't talking about my freedom of speech. As I said in my other comments. I was talking about restricting some people's freedom of speech, such as removing Dr. Daniel Erickson's video from Youtube discreetly. I can give you many examples don't worry ^^

Oh! Yeah, he's using his platform to tell people not to quarantine.

The censorship in this case seems to be to keep people safe, he's obviously free to say what he wants, YouTube are also free not to give a platform to anyone endangering public safety.

You may have a different opinion about whether or not there's a risk to public safety or not, YouTube seem to unsurprisingly be using the official advice as a guide.
1 up, 4y
I personally think they don't give a duck about or personal safety whatsoever. They are just too concerned for truth to come out to the surface. He is using his platform to convey his own observations and people are free to choose who to believe, if they are so scared that so many people will believe what that doctor has to say, that means they are not so credible to begin with.

It's not really control of the masses or social slavery, they just want him to spout his irresponsible nonsense somewhere else.

So what's the problem?

Are you concerned about the censorship of other people?
1 up, 4y
I'm concerned about the restrictions of certain opinions getting across. If we are truly free, then let everyone point their opinions, why bother to stop them, right?

Ohh, you're saying the censorship in social media is comparable to a dystopian society of conditioned 'slaves', gotcha.

If anything, Huxley was suggesting that reliance on social media at all, today's bread and circuses, was the thing to be mindful about; not so much that it's censorship was the equivalent of the control of the masses.

The fact that you take my word and generalise it to a point where as if I meant it to be the biggest cause related to the freedom issue is beyond me. One has to be shallow to think that the freedom of speech is only restricted to social media etc.

No, that's fine. Are you able to give more examples?

Are you worried that if you do, you'll mysteriously disappear.

Blink once for no and twice for yes.

I think we're going to need a better code.
