He was a racist and I would have kicked him out of the Democratic Party, if it was in my power. When he was first elected, the Republican Party had a better record on Civil Rights. Over 80% of Republicans in the Senate voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Only 60% of members of the Democratic Party in the Senate voted for those two laws. Many of Byrd's fellow Southern Democrats tried to block this legislation by filibuster, which Republicans put an end to. Do you still want me to shut up? Or, only when I tell the truth you don't like and want to avoid?

Look at that. You can't explain why Democrats are guilty of the very thing you accuse republicans of.

Not only was he elected by Democrats for 50 years, but he was promoted to party leadership in the Democrat Party. The other party leaders praised him.

The District Court for the part of Mass. where Mary Jo Kopechne died, could have charged him with Manslaughter or Murder, but did not. The Superior Court's Inquest, prompted by political calls for action, also did not charge him with Murder. A Special Grand Jury Investigation, years later, did not charge him with Manslaughter or Murder. Nor did a inquest held by the Motor Vehicle Department led to a six month suspension of his Drivers License. Without any question his unsafe driving let to the car crash that caused Ms. Kopechne's death. He left the scene of the crime and did not call for emergency help. But, under the law, he is not a murderer. He lost a race for the Democratic nomination for president to a very unpopular Jimmy Carter, who was seen as weak after a botched attempt to rescue hostages from Iran. So, he was popular with a minority of Democrats, but not "Loved by Dems." What he has to do with the current racist who is now serving and stirring things up, is unclear to me.
