Correct. What we can do is either not vote or protest vote; which achieve the same results honestly, or we could vote for the Republican or Democratic candidate.
My personal view is to go with the opposing candidate, especially if you're unhappy with the current party or President. At the very least, this minimizing the party's hold on power and doesn't allow either party to fully capitalize on the executive branch. Now, if you are happy with either viable Presidential candidate, then by all means... vote for them.
