I agree, the document was perfect. Ditch all the amendments, it should never be amended!

The story of the 18th amendment is a cautionary tale

Prohibition women | image tagged in prohibition women | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
Prohibition was backed by a coalition of progressives and conservatives

You can’t pass any Amendment without broad societal support, and that’s by design

But while we’re at it: Let’s cheer the 19th Amendment, which granted the right to vote to women

More awful amendments brought to you by “emotional leftists”: right?

18th had broad support of course. It had to in order to become an amendment. The point you so willfully miss is that changing the Constitution should be done rarely and with great sobriety of thought and the story of the 18th should serve as a cautionary tale.

18th did not have conservative support. Progressives (which were not like the virulent Progressives today) sold their idea well. That is, until it got implemented, which is pretty much the story of every Progressive initiative. Sounds good on paper.

The 18th Amendment didn’t come out of nowhere. It was the result of a century-plus of anti-alcohol activism in America, much of it religiously-motivated.

These conservative Christian groups joined forces with feminists/suffragettes interested in saving women from drunk and boorish men, and also “progressives” generally interested in improving the lot of working-class people, which it was believed banning alcohol would do.

My point stands that the 18th Amendment would not have passed except through getting lots of different groups with their own priorities on board.

And it’s not really a great example to offer against the principle of amending the constitution in general. It is only one out of 27 amendments, and it was itself repealed by the 21st Amendment just 14 years later.

I think if anything, we’ve gotten too shy about amending the Constitution. We haven’t had a new amendment since 1992.

Interestingly, the 27th Amendment took 202 years to ratify since it was first proposed!
