Whether you like it or not, people are most likely going to look back on "terrible mainstream rap" as classics.

The Beatles were critic darlings, and still are to this day - consistently hitting the top spot for all bands of all times, and who knows why, because they were always vastly overrated.

Most B-Boy music ('Rap') isn't even music, requires no talent, and sounds awful. Just like so much of it from the past, most of today's garbage wll be forgotton, as well as most mainstream music of any genre.

Music is NOT music unless music is being created. That does NOT mean some suburban Los Angelinos pretending to be ghettto talking over - yup, you got it - sampled BEATLES music.

Very good points about new music always being hated and dismissed when it first comes out.

It's pretty universal that everyone thinks the pinnacle of music was from their childhood/teenage years. And that bias is reflected in the opinions of 50-80 year old pop and rock critics who act as gatekeepers.

Also, all the bad music from yesteryear gets forgotten while only the good music gets remembered. So there is a survivors' bias.

I actually think the rap music coming out these days is in a lot of ways more innovative, introspective, and boundary-pushing than it was back in the early-2000s bling era when I first started tuning into music. Sure, back then you had the greats like Eminem and Jay-Z that are still remembered. But you had all that Cash Money/Birdman crap with blaring horns and awkward cliché rhymes about gold chains and selling drugs.

Every era has its high and low points.
