The Westboro Baptist Church said it's ok to have a pet worm? News to me.

Only if it's kept in a doghouse.

Do you know what? You're the first person to actually point out why that book is offensive.

Yes, pet worms do not go in doghouses!

Right?

I absolutely do not want to agree with the WBC, but if they are upset that that worm is not in soil, I can see their point.

Really never thought I'd be siding with them over something.

Yeah, worms need access to the rain, when it burrows underground your pet's gone - it's just terrible pet keeping. All wrong.

I don't THINK the WBC pushed this concern in particular. I could be wrong. I think their gripe was with something else entirely. But it's the only valid complaint I've ever heard.

I'm starting to get the feeling that the OP is anti-worm but doesn't have the guts to just be honest about it.

Trying to put the focus onto someone who's literally just dressed up and reading kids a story seems like a weak diversion tactic.

It's so sad. And you know, the real winners in all this are big doghouse corporations. There's no end to the trouble.

There's a real chance that the actual scandal here is children being the victims of shameless targeted marketing by big doghouse corporations.

Children are already over-exposed to advertising, the classroom should solely be a place of education.

I wonder how many of them pressured their parents to buy them doghouse and then dug up worms, only to be heartbroken when it didn't end well.

And we warned them all that climate change was going to make doghouse corporations do something drastic.

Ironically, despite that being the catalyst, I feel that the worms are the real losers here and that there just isn't enough awareness about how they are being treated.

It's a slippery slope. First it's worms in a doghouse, next thing you know, you're keeping pet frogs, next you're telling people your pet frog sings and dance with a top hat and a cane, next you're trying to manage your frog's talent as its agent - I guess what I'm saying is, cartoons are awesome.

See! Right here. You yourself very quickly acknowledged that the contents of the book are really quite inocuous and then you say "actually, a better way of putting it" and we're back to she's talking to the kids about homosexuality. THERE'S NOTHING GAY ABOUT PET WORMS IN DOGHOUSES!

Moving goal post! You did it again! It's you - it's not how you're phrasing it, it's not that you didn't meme it quite right, it's you being stubborn!

Why are you talking about a pet worm? The Westboro Baptist Church has said numerous things such as, and I quote from what the SPLC says is on the Westboro Baptist Church's own website; "The only true Nazis in this world are f*gs. They want to force you by law to support their filth, and they want to shut you up by law when they hate what you say." (as seen here https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/group/westboro-baptist-church , I linked the SPLC site because I think I'd get in trouble if I linked the WBC's website)

While I detest and disapprove of the Westboro Baptist Church, their conspiracy theory said that people will be forced by law to support this... and here we see a guy dressed as a demonic drag queen reading a pro-homosexuality book to children in school (I've seen that book before), like a caricature from Westboro Baptist Church propaganda come to life.

Look at the book! "It's ok to have a pet worm. It's ok to be proud of yourself."

It's not a pro-homosexuality book, it's a pro-worm book! Calm down!

After double-checking, I realized that this isn't a pro-homosexuality book (at least, not overtly). The book is "It's Okay to be Different" by Todd Parr. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shYf3prwXJU

While that book is not a problem in and of itself, the fact that there's such a over-the-top drag queen reading this book to children makes it look like there's at least some ulterior motives at work.
3 ups, 4y,
1 reply
Ulterior motives? Yeah, it seems like there's a real risk, what if those kids think creativity is OK? Or expressing yourself? Or having confidence?

THEN what'll happen?

Hey kids, it's quiz time...

Today's question: If pro-heterosexuality books don't make gay kids straight, how do pro-homosexuality books make straight kids gay?

☆Answer☆ Don't be stupid, sexuality is not a choice.

Well done to everyone who got it right.

I think you know I didn't mean ulterior motives like those. I never said it would work, I said it looks like the school system and certain groups are trying to indoctrinate them into accepting it and never disagreeing with it, if not outright wanting them to become like that.

Again, we experience difficulty indoctrinating children to punctuate a sentence correctly. Somehow we've cracked the pedagogical secret to making kids want to become drag queens?
1 up, 4y,

I meant indoctrinating them to accept homosexuality regardless of any convictions (there's a difference between accepting homosexuality and accepting homosexuals). Whether homosexuality is natural and/or good is a debate for another place. Also, at this point, I think you're just trolling me.

The point was about the intention and ulterior motives, not whether or not it could - or would - work.
[deleted]
2 ups, 4y
And you can't deal with the fact that intention and ulterior motive is that children like being read to by colorful characters. It breaks up the monotony of education. You're so obstinate in your conviction that there's something immoral about drag queens that you can't even understand that drag queen fashion was stolen from Japanese interpretive theatre in the first place. You mention several times that you think there's some sort of coersion going on here even though the children are free to make up their own minds when they're old enough to understand the issues you're getting at, but no matter how many times you were pressed to specify where the coersion is, you move the goal posts back to motives. Then you suggest we're the trolls. You move the goal posts but we're the trolls.

It's just a cute storytime reading.

I've had it with you.
[deleted]
3 ups, 4y,

Yeah, the ulterior motive is that finding people to read to children is incredibly difficult at the best of times and the fact that someone is volunteering to do it with some theatrics to boot is nothing short of a godsend to an education system stretched for resources!

I remain unconvinced mostly because Michelle Obama and the school chose such an overt drag queen, and chose for them to read a book celebrating differences (I wonder what differences they had in mind); they really couldn't find anyone else? Not to mention the existence of this https://www.dragqueenstoryhour.org/

Well, having a pet worm, apparently. Look, this stuff is REALLY innocuous and frankly, if we can't even get kids to add fractions together, you CANNOT seriously be afraid that reading a book about worms is going to sway kids one way or another about homosexuality.

The book isn't about worms; the person in the video link I posted shows all the pages of the book (they aren't criticizing the book, they're just reading it, and they seem to like it). Do you understand?

I told you my suspicions and why I have them.

No, I don't understand. It IS ok to be different, and what better way to make that point to children than someone who visually looks different. What would you have, a guy in a suit and a tie saying it's ok to be different?

Someone not a drag queen; an amputee, someone with a (non-transmittable) skin condition... or if they had to be a drag queen, not one dressed like this.

I was asking if you understand that the book isn't pro-gay or pro-worm, and that having someone like this read it raises lots of questions.

Are you suggesting that the worm is some kind of lewd metaphor?

If so, I suspect that that says more about how you view your body than it does about the book.

No, I'm not suggesting anything about the worm. Also, at this point, I think you're just trolling me. If I had to guess, I'd say because I "dared" to say something about the Westboro Baptist Church that wasn't criticizing them (directly) or mocking them.

True. Though they're being forced by law to support homosexuality (or at least facing legal consequences for refusing to support it). Let's not forget the backlash that food chain Chick-fil-A faced when some refused to donate to LGBT charities

I'm not so sure they aren't (in the "facing legal consequences for refusing to support it" sense).

Good question. I don't think they're being forced to support Islam in that sense. Then again, a lot of mainstream food companies such as Woolworth's are increasingly getting their meat from halal suppliers or ensuring it's halal certified where possible (though that's a discussion for another place and time).

And; https://hellogiggles.com/news/lesbian-couple-wins-christian-bakers-abominations/ (though the bakers shouldn't have resorted to name-calling, maybe that did them in legally)

Fair enough; while I think that's a bit much considering it was merely insults, I've felt similar towards people who are prejudiced against a group I'm either a part of, support and/or think is getting a raw deal (eg; I am not a fan of Seth MacFarlane).
