Personally, I don’t think anything should be off the table where dark humor is concerned. If you want to make jokes about 9/11, the Holocaust, slavery, gore or whatever, I say go for it. I think joking about something takes the bite out of it and actually helps us have a dialogue about resolving the issue.

When I was young there was a saying. "Sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me". How times have changed.

The only damage words deal is the damage you let them deal

I can maybe 10% agree with you on that. Humor can help in some situations for obvious reasons (especially if it's about yourself), but I'd say that it's inappropriate to view those kind of things as humorous, even if it's to "take the bite out". As we all know, history repeats itself, so maybe some things are better left with the bite still in them in order to prevent them from happening again. Just my 2 cents on that

I would argue that making dark jokes actually keeps the memory of what happened intact and encourages people who haven’t heard of that event to go look it up. If I make a joke about the Black Death, some people probably aren’t going to get it due to it happening in the 1340s. However they can look it up and learn about that event where if I didn’t make the joke, they never would have looked it up.

But it's not everybody's job to laugh at messed up jokes. Let's say A girl got raped and the offender killed her parents, and I made a terrible rape joke. How could she laugh at the joke if it brings up such horrible memories? We need to only make jokes about that to our friends.

I don’t expect everyone to laugh at a joke. Humor is subjective after all. However, it’s not going to stop me from making dark jokes when I want to.

No, it actually doesn't. I actually find what you are saying offensive because 6 million Jews were killed during the Holocaust. And, it wasn't a quick death. 9/11 was the same. People burned to death. How would you like it if someone made jokes about you being stripped of your clothes, or see your family get beaten to death and have their bodies get thrown into a pit? How would you like it if someone starts joking about your family member having the choice of burning to death, or falling to their death? That's what you are saying. The people in the Holocaust and 9/11 experienced these things.

Yeah I don’t care if you’re offended. Go virtue signal to someone else.

You didn't answer my question. How would you like it if someone made jokes about you being stripped of your clothes, and then see your family get beaten to death and see their bodies get thrown into a pit(and without clothing) or see them get burned to death?

I wouldn’t care. I realize it’s a joke and not worth getting offended over. I would probably even go the extra mile and crack jokes along with them.

That's why we need to find the right jokes for the right audience, and the right audience for the right jokes

Communist jokes aren’t funny unless everyone gets them

I can’t really decide on my opinion because all my demons keep arguing about stuff

Dark humor is the best humor. If someone can't take a joke, that's their problem.

I think people need a place to crack jokes about anything and everything without PC police coming after. Don't like the stream, don't follow it but don't go there just to be offended.

I like this stream just fine. I have at least half a dozen submissions in it, two of them about baby seals.

If you aren't worried about people being offended, why are you worried that some of the jokes in here are crossing lines? Maybe I misunderstood your point.

This is based off a conversation I had in the Dark humor stream. People were complaining about all the new rules (most of which I had nothing to do with) and it seemed to me many people don't understand what dark humor really is so that is the reason for this question. I'm not suggesting posting dark humor in this stream just wanted to discuss the whole idea. This stream is for discussions like this. Glad you're posting and discussing with us :)

Dark humor helps me to accept and digest those painful experiences I have gone through. There’s likely no better way to accept and embrace these negative sides of life than with a hint of humor and laughter.

It depends on what you base the jokes off. There is a line from dark humor and depressing. If you make jokes about something like the holocaust or 9/11 it can be taken too far.

This is a good example of dark humor. It's click to show because dark humor often pokes fun at serious, sometimes tragic situations that could be a trigger for people who have experienced those situations. I could totally go off on a dark humor streak because I'm a naturally sarcastic person and have a bit of depression, great combinations for dark humor. I can see both sides of it. Sometimes you have to laugh at human error, even death as a way to cope. But there is a time and place. Moderating the dark humor stream has made me question if some people actually understand what dark humor is.

Dark humor is not meant to be shared with everyone, otherwise you could just be seen as a heartless individual who cares nothing for others suffering. The best humor uses more words than images, it leaves the images up to the audiences imagination. (It would be crossing a line I believe to have images of real corpses of school children for this joke)

That meme was already pretty dark. Dark humor is indeed a way to get even with shocking things, but there are a lot of people who do not get so well on it... Well, for me dark humor is a bit my way of survival.

Hm, as someone who once found that kind of humor funny but has now decided to kind of...sweep it under the rug until I fully decide. It really depends what exactly it is. If it's about real people or real events or even based on them, just remember that you're then laughing at other people's suffering and in many cases, deaths. Now I don't know if this applies to all dark humor, is there dark humor that's not about other people suffering or dying? In any case, I think I've decided that that's a line I don't want to cross.

What dark humor is: jokes about death, morbid jokes, gory jokes, nihilism, jokes along the lines of that image of Batman sitting alone at a table captioned "family dinner"
What dark humor isn't: racism, transphobia, antisemitism
I hate looking through "dark humor" tags because of the way people misuse the term

Actually that's exactly what dark humor is. Listening for 2 minutes to famous dark humor comedians wilI tell you it's about poking fun at stereotypes, historic events that are painful,
Sometimes even laughing at painful personal events. But there is a time and place for all of this. The dark humor stream should be a PC police free space for people to joke about anything. Im very religious and I could easily get offended at some jokes posted there but I don't let it get to me. Most dark jokes aren't meant to be malicious. If anyone is offended by dark humor don't visit dark humor streams and you should be fine. Now inserting dark humor in other people's memes in fun wouldn't be appropriate.

I think it depends on the person. I mean, some people can take the joke and some people cant.
2 ups, 5y
I think every topic deserves to have fun made about it. But I also understand that not everyone will think it's funny - although usually people are offended for the wrong reasons... It's everyone's own choice what they find funny and what is "too far". I just don't like it when people tell me my joke about disabled people is going too far because there is someone in a wheelchair nearby. Now, if the person in the wheelchair complained that'd be fine but usually the people personally affected are the ones laughing the loudest. 🤷

It's this sort of thing maybe?

Can't really control how other ppl process negative emotions, but it's funnier when you stick it to the ones who really deserve it, like the stupid dead kids who ruin everyone's good time.
