It's funny how Hollyweird has corrupted the idea that "the individual" is more important than the many as an "American value", when it is absolutely not. Spock knew.

Well, in conservativism, the individual and individual rights ARE paramount... however, not to the point of infringing on the everyone else's rights. I think it would be better said that the minority is celebrated in Hollywood (not "minority" of race, but in any classification) and the exceptions should be protected more than the general population.

Are you people listening to yourselves? That's why "cars are lighter not safer?" You're saying it like it's a good thing. With capitalism, the needs of a few outweigh the needs of the many, you're just too brainwashed to understand that. What a bunch of mindless cogs you are. The elite have your heads shoved so far up Trump's ass, you don't even care that they want to risk all of our lives to keep them from losing their millions.

Okay. I hate seeing the word 'brainwashed'. Not due to offence, but how lazy it is to discredit the other person and their views.
And this is from both sides. Right or left. Or in Timber terms, the LEFT (TM) and everyone else.

of course speed limits are 70. what kind of government-subsidized, politician-owning auto industry would allow speed limits of 20 on major roads and not get public resistance and demand for more train travel?

Yep. A balance of risk and reward. Proves the lockdowns were a failure.

"A balance of risk and reward"

imagine taking a risk every day just to go to work and get paid. this is why i want train travel in the us to be prevalent again

Fortunately very few want that inconvenience.

"very few want"

a majority of americans labeled as "very few". lovely. especially since our road system is complete crap. 40,000 people die each year due to road accidents.

I don't think you know what majority means

well, when a third of america's population is in new york city, and the united states has a lot of other high-density areas (chicago, colombus, minneapolis, los angeles, seattle, denver, you name it), think about the amount of people wanting and alternative from being stuck with a bunch of other people on the road and with little control over what they do because they have to focus on the gray space in front of them. that leads up to a good majority. The majority of texans and floridians want an alternative to driving and flying, and their prayers are being answered with the existence of private rail companies such as Virgin Trains USA and Texas Central.

You're automatically assuming everyone living in dense areas wants that without any actual evidence that that is true. I live in one of the major cities you mentioned and neither I nor anybody I know wants to use the light rail system unless they're headed downtown, and only then because of lack of parking.

The majority of american rail systems aren't built to serve. They're placed by politicians, not the public. As a result, americans are conditioned to think rail is useless, even though that is hardly the case when other countries and even the northeast United States can utilize rail effectively. A rail system built by a private company is built by the people and for the people thanks to profit motive. Private passenger rail was what the United States was built on, and is why we have the big cities we have today. Air and road transportation consistently fail at trying to emulate what railroads did easily back in the past.

Notice that you said the people you know don't *use* the system. Have you ever asked them if would use it if it was better? Like i said, many rail systems in the United States are dysfunctional. I've talked to many people about the railroads, many living near me, and they would use the train if it was
A) more reliable and on time
B) faster
C) served where they live

Problem is, whenever a private rail tries to appease the public demand, they're immediately met with opposition:

NIMBYs
"""Environmentalists"""
The media
And oil interests who pay them to shut up when a new freeway or runway gets built.

Build them all you want. Just don’t require them and they will fail.
0 ups, 5y
the reasons they "failed" back in the day was because of the oil industry lobbying the government and buying out streetcars while taking advantage of america's recovery from the great depression

Then again, there's also a reason why speed limits are lowered when near roadside accidents.

Yep, proves my point. Lowered only for the targeted area. Speed limits city, state, or nationwide aren’t affected. Just around the accident during the limited period of effect.
