U.S. relations with Germany are at a low point.
And for the first time ever, France has been talking about creating a “European” (i.e. U.S. independent) army.

This is all a natural and predictable response to being bullied by the U.S. President who constantly downtalks NATO, ripped up the JCPOA and seems ready to make war on Iran at the drop of a hat, and carries on a bromance with Putin.
Alliances are about way more than the raw numbers spent on military. Trust is huge. If it’s not there, your allies won’t follow you into war or even exchange information with you.
And Trump’s broken that trust. Perhaps a Democrat can restore it, but if Europe feels like it can only count on the U.S. when a Democrat is in office, then they’ll go their own way.
