Well, much like Rosa Parks risked persecution for sitting in the front of the bus, Ellen faced persecution by being one of the first notable people to come out as gay. That's fair. I think the combination of her advocacy for the LGBT community in combination with her achievements in the arts justifies the award for her. Additionally, Ellen's show and message isn't political in nature. Maher's show is.
