Do you have a plan for the day after Trump’s pre-ordained acquittal? Democrats do.

Do you have a plan for the day after Trump’s pre-ordained acquittal? Democrats do. | An impeachment trial without witnesses is a national and constitutional travesty: but in a sense, I’m laughing; At a GOP Senate and President too scared to allow top Administration officials to testify, let alone the President himself. Think a sham impeachment trial is going to put all this to bed? Nah. Democrats have plenty of other options, like subpoenaing Bolton to testify on the House floor. Releasing the blocked documents as soon as the next Democratic President takes office. Or appointing another special prosecutor like Mueller. THE FUNNY THING IS, THE GOP HAD MORE THAN ENOUGH NUMBERS IN THE SENATE TO HAVE CALLED THE WITNESSES AND STILL ACQUITTED TRUMP AT THE END OF THE DAY. WHY NOT? AS IT STANDS, THE GOP IS SLEEPWALKING RIGHT INTO A TRAP. AS ALWAYS, IT IS NOT THE CRIME, BUT THE COVER-UP. There are witnesses allowed. Anyone who testified to the House inquiry can be called upon to testify in the Senate trial.

If the testimony of the witnesses was enough to impeach, it should be enough to convict - otherwise, the Democrats impeached without sufficient evidence.

If they need more witnesses now that it's in the trial phase, why didn't they need them during the inquiry?

Once again, I will repost a link to the full House Impeachment Report: in its nearly 700-page glory, with dissenting views included in the interests of fairness and balance:

https://docs.house.gov/billsthisweek/20191216/CRPT-116hrpt346.pdf

I will keep reposting it until it becomes clear that most or all of you have actually read it, or enough of it to get the picture.

The evidence laid out here is enough to convict Trump, in my book. But clearly not everyone sees it that way. And Republicans have argued over and over again that there is "no firsthand testimony!" while doing their level best to block that same testimony from ever being heard.

We need all the testimony now because this is a matter of the highest national importance -- and the Administration's claims of executive privilege or whatever when Trump is literally broadcasting all this information to the entire world via Twitter every night are flimsy as hell to begin with and at this point waived.

In criminal law, the defendant can't force the prosecution to rest their case just because the prosecution brought some strong evidence to the table. The prosecution gets to make their whole case.

There is no evidence! It's all hearsay evidence, and opinion.

Besides, if it's enough to convict - then why do the Democrats need additional witnesses?

The Senate already allows any witness who testified in the House inquiry.....all 18 witnesses (2 of which, the Democrats don't want to testify again)

My goodness, she’s still posting that baloney Democrat House resolution. She has nothing else.

Moving the goalposts | HOW AM I DOING THIS, EXACTLY? I’VE CALLED FOR A FAIR TRIAL SINCE THE BEGINNING! | image tagged in moving the goalposts | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
A couple weeks ago before this trial really got underway, I made a meme in which I challenged Senate Republicans to “step up to the plate” and hold a fair trial after the House Democrats had allegedly failed to do so.

imgflip.com/i/3mf2tr

I made this meme because I foresaw exactly these issues we are having now.

Some right-wing folks laughed at the notion of a fair impeachment trial, but others agreed with me. This meme got 10 upvotes, which is not bad at all for a liberal opinion posted in the politics stream.

Well: How is that meme looking now? Who has shifted the goalposts, exactly?

So Shifty sh*t (er sorry Schiff) was holding closed door meetings, put a stranglehold on who could be used as witnesses (had to hold to the dem story line) and pretty much excluded anything he didn't think would damage the president. Yeah. That's fair.

I don't agree, but that's pretty much my point.

If all that was unfair, then correct the record in the Senate instead of relying on the allegedly unfair and biased House proceedings which the GOP now seems totally content to do
1 up, 5y
If what Schiff and cohorts did was unfair, then the whole impeachment is a sham and shouldn't even be in the Senate.

Is this a meme or a poorly written high school essay? Can't say I blame your snowflake meltdown.
Republicans are going to have fun owning the GOP election landslides, all thanks to the drunken arrogance of Nancy Pelosi. When this is over, even Chuck Schumer won't return her calls.

The Dems are actually LUCKY that there are no witnesses. Nothing a witness they would call would lead to the 67 votes they need, but they have plenty to be worried about. Their failed coup to reverse the 2016 election would be totally exposed, including the pathetic efforts of klowns like Schiff and Nadler.

This is why you're not really seeing any effort by the Dems to call witnesses, other than lip service.

Besides, calling a reasonable number of witnesses would drag the charade out for months, and the Dems have some impartial jurist senators that need to get out on the campaign trail, so they can defeat Trump in the general election.

All sarcasm aside, my $0.02 is that the charade has come this far, so let both sides call all the witnesses they want. The truth is the most important element needed in this show trial.

You’ve stayed admirably consistent with your remarks from my meme two weeks ago, and I appreciate that.

At a certain point, when you put enough evidence on the table: a show trial starts to look an awful lot like a real trial!

You're still asking for the Senate to to the Houses job and using talking points to justify it. In a fair trail, if the jurors investigates the crime themselves, they get booted from the jury as that is not fair and impartial conduct.

And if as you sated below that the House unfairly impeached the President then the trial itself is the fruit of the poisonous tree and then should be dismissed for fairness. The solution to unfairness in a trail is not to introduce more unfairness to counter it.

Or proceed to a judgment of the issues before hearing the most relevant evidence.

Your arguments would make more sense if the Senate were behaving like an impartial jury, but they’re not. In this case they’re the judge and the jury. And unlike every trial court level judge in the country, they have no one to overturn them on appeal.

I’ve said many times that impeachment is not truly analogous to a real trial, and this is one of the big reasons why

So it's not like a real trial, but you want it like a real trail when it suits you.

Well, the Senate just gave us our answer. It’s not like a real trial at all.

We just learned that Impeachment is, basically, a totally empty and fruitless gesture at least where the Senate and Presidency are held by the same party.

My opinion and the opinions of constitutional scholars around the world are going to have to be heavily revised.

Indeed! Because you have the votes to acquit and always have.

But if you were at all interested in the truth of the matter you would not have blocked the testimony of firsthand witnesses, let alone Trump himself.

What a sorry chapter in our slide toward an imperial Presidency.

The Founders clearly had more faith in future generations than was warranted when they drafted Art II, Sec. IV of our Constitution.

Another statement you are liable to agree is right for the wrong reasons!
