after 20 years, and tens of thousands of deaths due to both government and private brutal oppression (see:pinkertons) we saw the rise of labor unions.a collective of disparate coalitions that joined together to exact immense political force that was key in pushing FDR into negotiating "the new deal".
another really interesting notation in this era of our history, was the diversity in American politics, and an incredibly vibrant citizen journalism.
americans would not even recognize the republican and democratic parties, but there were also socialists, communists, anarchists, wobblies to name a few.the working class of that time also printed their own newsletters, papers, flyers and pamphlets.there was an incredibly popular newsletter (forgot the name) which was printed by a coalition of milkmaids.
that's right...milkmaids.
no internet.
no tv.
no cell phones.
you had major printed newspapers, but these small (usually community oriented) journalistic outlets were incredibly popular.
I find it fascinating, and utterly amazing, that over 100 years ago,our ancestors had a better grasp on public political life than we do today, with none of the technology that we enjoy.
don't you find that interesting?
