While I do agree with the original poster (personally, I have paid off my wife's school loans and I am almost done with mine), I do think the student loan system needs to be reformed.

Humor me a moment. You have a kid who goes through a super liberal public school system. He spends his entire life being told, "yeah, lesbian dance theory is a great way to make a living." Gets to college on mediocre grades and majors in lesbian dance theory. What does the loan officer do? Sign that check as approved. I can somewhat sympathize.

If it were a private loan, sign whatever loan you want. But my tax dollars is going to delusioned kids and their shitty grades towards shitty majors? I call bullshit. My tax dollars should go to real majors and only to kids who actually have good grades.

Back in the day I had $11k in loans but had to pay 19% interest on the loans (thanks Jimmy Carter), The loans have higher principles today but are just as cheap when financed because of low interest rates and inflation.

I pretty much agree with that. However, the reason I do support at least some aid and student loan reform is that people who are trapped in debt are those who try to shake up the system and vote for people like Bernie Sanders or AOC. Seems easier to reform the student loans programs so they only pay for a field deemed useful for society and try to give those stuck in debt some debt relief like freezing interest rates or some sort of tax credit. They should have been more responsible, but it’s pretty easy to see how the system screwed them over.
