You debated the issue of this memer(s) yesterday with someone else, and later claimed that person said they didn't know who Purgie was (they meant personally, not as a resident troll), all indicating you have encountered him previously, and THIS prompted you to meme about him, but not the rest?

YOU are missing the warning signs. THIS is akin to how no one cared about Jewish people getting slaughtered over the millenia. The demonization of the eternal 'other' is nothing new. "If it wasn't for the Jew, I would have had to invented him." THAT'S the name of this game.

What you call a "wall of text" below that you think obscured the contemporary issue of hatred against Mexicans and Muslims is actually intended as a direct analogy to what we are seeing today. In the analogy, these groups are the "vaguely illegal sorts of people" equivalent to other disfavored groups like Gypsies and Slavs in Nazi Germany.

Why didn't I just say this upfront? I believe it is more effective from a persuasive standpoint to leave certain conclusions unstated. That forces the reader to activate parts of their brain to "connect the dots" that they wouldn't normally if you were to just tell them. I believe that I left enough clues the below story that astute readers could see the parallels to America today -- especially the hint that the "economy was doing so well" under Hitler.

I am not "missing the warning signs," and no, I'm not forgetting the Muslims and the Mexicans. I think you are being nitpicky as hell and illustrating the attitude I described in my OP meme.

History and current events do not always ring the same, especially to those eating this up and cheering it on. Or even worse, the echoes do embolden them.

btw, the Politics stream was made to allow for less restrained speech which was turning the main (now called "Fun") stream ugly. More active censorship will curtail more than a troll and its emulators.

Again: reference to the Holocaust was chosen for its power. And because family separations at the border, while I personally disagree strongly with them, aren't genocide. Nor are the opinions offered against Islam on this site genocide, although they are also wrong.

lol The actual death threats are just a small minority. The memes attacking Mexicans, Muslims, gays, and trans folks (just the most common groups attacked) are what I'd personally consider "hate speech," but I don't advocate banning rotten attitudes. Just actual threats of violence.

Whatever they're doing re: purgey, it's not working well enough. Stuff slips through. If actual human beings are modding it then it should be cut off before it's ever featured.

Purgie's memes make claims of having murdered such folks,, and calls for others to do so, even announcing upcoming dates. Heck, OM even reported him to the authorities, and he made a couple of comments indicating that they did pay him a visit. So no worries, his time traveling excursion to join the SS does not seem to be on his itinerary in the near future/past, so, um, yeah.
Whatever.

Sorry for the tone of this but you’re clearly more interested in trolling me and posturing like some sort of veteran and expert rather than joining forces to combat death threats. It’s not hard.

99% of people would rather sit by and allow Jews to be digitally chucked into ovens than make the difficult cognitive admission that they, themselves, were in the wrong and their own mental habits and attitudes toward others need changing.

This is how millions of otherwise well-meaning Germans ignored the warning signs on the way to the Holocaust. They were taught that other countries — and other non-German, vaguely illegal sorts of people (Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, Slavs) — were responsible for Germany’s decline from greatness. If they could just put *those* people in their place, then their country could finally catch a break, be respected internationally, turn a corner, and they would all be recognized as and feel great again.

Of course the Germans were never *told* that the Jews would be chucked in the ovens. But when the Jewish neighborhoods started disappearing... onto trains, swiftly, in the dead of night, with as little hassle and fuss as possible, to the work camps needed for their own benefit as well as the country’s... no one spoke up to stop it. Everyone was captured by Hitler’s magnetic persona and emotionally invested in his success, which he defined as synonymous with the success of the country.

After all, the economy was now doing so well these days, under Hitler.
