Actually, while both parties have been hemorrhaging members, the Republicans have been doing so at a faster rate. In fact if it wasn't for redistricting, they'd be pretty much gone. You ARE aware of the number Republican Presidents who won the popular vote in over three decades?

The thing is, Democrats enjoyed an expansion during the Reagan/Bush 41 era because conservatism was in the mainstream. Democrats sold themselves as the counterculture and gained a lot of momentum. Then 8 years of Clinton, 9/11 changed the dynamic for Bush so he really didn't have a mainstream conservatism during his 8 years, followed by 8 years of Obama. Strong Democrat leadership for 16 years with an intermediate 8 years of weak conservative leadership brought Liberalism into mainstream culture.

And that's where the problem for the Democrats arises in the current political landscape. They enjoyed the buildup, turning the counterculture into the mainstream culture during those 16 years. But the funny thing is, you can't be the culture AND the counterculture. Conservatism is the counterculture now.

You may think conservatives are losing faith, but I don't see that at all. The #walkaway movement has been going strong for several years now. I've been to a Trump rally in a liberal city - and there were 50k people in attendance. I didn't see one protester (although, I was told there were around a dozen). I have friends around the country who have similar experience.

Of course the Democrats will be around - but their power is going to be greatly diminished until they figure out how not to trod on the middle class. Running on platforms of higher taxes and confiscation is not how you win the hearts and minds of the backbone of the economy.
