Side by side, but honestly I won't buy another one. The freezer space is practically unusable as far as i'm concerned. Only reason we have it is because it came with the house.

Same here, I hate the side by side! Seems so cramped compared to the standard top freezer, also no secure way to keep toddlers from getting into it as you probably are well aware, lol

Surprisingly ours doesn't seem to be too curious about opening the fridge, she wants to climb inside it when we do open it but she hasn't opened it on her own yet. Now the ice maker dispenser is another thing though, she likes to push the lever and make the ice fall out, which she then picks up and puts in the dog's water bowl. You know, because dogs need ice water :)

Oh yea, the Ice maker is fun when you're a kid. I figured out how to turn ours off but my kids open the door anyway and put little toys down the hole, close the door and push on the dispenser so they feel like they are getting a prize from the quarter machine, lol

I think that design makes sense since the fridge is used more often it should be at eye level. My only problem would be kids constantly climbing into the freezer to steal icecream or cubes, lol
