Medgar Evers and the Rev. Dr. MLK Jr both had guns in their homes - already. The problem that Evers dealt with - was the cowardice of Klansmen, firing into his home unannounced from the darkness.

MLK was murdered by the US Government. There was an Army Sniper team in town - in case the CIA hitter had missed, on the first attempt. The years of FBI tailing and surveillance on King was ordered ended on the morning of the day that he was killed - seemingly to prevent any 'awkward' observations during his murder.
