Clearly, Trump has tapped into a deep sentiment in the American people that does not believe in nourishing alliances.
However, Malignant Messiah's alternative is to boast rugged individualism, foolishly thinking he -- and the nation -- can "go it alone."
Admittedly, it is appealing to believe that "lone heroes" -- six shooters blazing -- can "save the day."
But reality doesn't work that way.
Strong nations have strong alliances, and they keep them strong.
Weak nations do not have strong alliances.
Trump's Secretary of Defense, Marine General James "Mad Dog" Mattis, observes that "Nations with allies thrive, and those without them wither. At this time, we can see storm clouds gathering... A leader must display strategic acumen that incorporates respect for those nations that have stood with us when trouble loomed. Returning to a strategic stance that includes the interests of as many nations as we can make common cause with, we can better deal with this imperfect world we occupy together. Absent this, we will occupy an increasingly lonely position, one that puts us at increasing risk in the world."
