Slavery was a common practice of native people in Central America, along with human sacrifice, cannibalism, and constant warfare. Never tortured anyone.

A guy called Leif Erikson, a Viking, discovered America centuries before Columbus.

Shall we examine the flaws of every historical figure and expunge them from the record? Can't we acknowledge a person's accomplishments, while recognizing they were also sinners like the rest of us? That's all fine. We just don't need a day in which we call it, by the name of someone like this. It's not hurting anyone to change the name to recognize the natives of America.

Bah, Columbus Day was only made an official holiday here in the first place to appease Italian-American immigrants (from whom I myself am descended on my father's side, so I'd like to think that says something). Leif Erikson Day is better—the Norsemen landed on the Americas centuries before the Spaniards, but never established a lasting foothold due to failure to adapt, economic decline, climate change, and hostilities with native peoples ("Skrælingjar") such as the proto-Inuit Thule.
So, yeah, the Vikings had dibs. For me, that's enough.
