I too have never been subjected to the peril of such math. I actually never even took Algebra or any of it's evil relatives. I managed basic math and have never had to worry otherwise. I home school my kids now, and when I run across math that I do not know I make it a point to learn it. When I am no longer able to do this I will hire a tutor.

I started learning algebra back in 1997, but I had to stop because of circumstances involving my homelessness at the time. However, it was actually much easier than I assumed it would be

Glad you're not homeless now! That's a rough thing. I had my stretch of being homeless back in high school. I find that at this stage I am more able to understand math. I am guessing brain maturity has something to do with it. I am hoping it won't be as difficult as I think.

Yep. There are. I use quite a bit of free online resources as it is. However, if it gets into math that is so hairy that I cannot possibly untangle it, or that my kids can't using these free online resources there will need to be something to fall back on.

I'm an electrical engineer, and the formulas i use on a daily basis I learned in the first year of my schooling. I could have stopped after that and still had the same useful knowledge for my career as I have now...come on schools!

My question is, WHY THE HECK do they even teach it??

Who started it as a basic math curriculum, and why??

Only thing I can figure is that it prepares you for more advanced courses. I had an interesting conversation with I think it was OlympianProduct (I'll have to look now) about schools offering courses like that as electives. Thing is, had I not taken what I did, and I surely would not have if given the choice at the time, I would have never qualified for getting into engineering school and I would not have had the opportunities I've had so far in my career. Real life application though...yeah, very little for most people.

Of all of them, geometry has the most practical use for most people, and some algebra.

there seems to be a correlation between "people who can do math higher than sophomore year in high school" and "successful human being"

If you aren't really good with numbers, especially if a variable is involved...you have my instant distrust.

I missed it in 8th, I was in the hospital
I failed it in 9th, having missed it in 8th
I retook it in 10th, got a 104% final grade..while talking plane geometry at the same time (I think I got an 86% final grade or something like that)

If I could do it...anyone could.

That is not disputed by me. Just that highly judgmental remark about people who are not proficient in certain math. I have known a LOT of people who are quite capable in the math you describe, yet they are some of the laziest dead beats I have ever known. You cannot judge a man based on his mathematical capabilities. Because simply having excellent math skills are nothing if you sit in your daddy's basement all your life.

Basic math is pretty much algebra. If you have to solve 9-2, that can be written as 9-2=x: solve for x. Either way, I agree school has too much useless information. If I could have learned about computers in high school instead of learning geography and biology, college would have been much easier, as would parts of my career.

You use algebra all the time with your woman's boobs. What you do to one side, you must do to the other. If you don't, you will be wrong and hear about it.

I use it all the time when i build things. Mostly to make sure my foundations and rooms are square. Pythagorean's therum: a2+b2=c2. Or a 3,4,5 triangle. The short side is 3, the middle length side is 4 and the diagnol side is 5.

Problem: Beckett347 has $17 in his piggy bank. How much money does he need to buy a game that costs $68?

Solution: Let x represent the amount of money Beckett347 needs. Then the following equation can represent this problem:

17 + x = 68

We can subtract 17 from both sides of the equation to find the value of x.

68 - 17 = x

Answer: x = 51, so Beckett347 needs $51 to buy the game.
