MichiganLibe...er um...FBI_OPEN_UP already took care of explaining the USA national flag, so i'll explain my home state of South Carolina flag instead. The crescent moon is a symbol that SC soldiers wore on their hats during the revolutionary war, and the blue color represents the color of their uniforms. The palmetto tree (actually a sabal palm) is what the fortified walls at Ft. Moultrie were constructed of during the war. As with any fort wall, the idea was for them to deflect cannon fire, but when the British attacked the fort, the soft spongy nature of the wood actually absorbed the cannonballs during the attack. This effect was unexpected and much more effective than anticipated, and proved to be one of the deciding factors in SC winning the battle.
