You can go to a different page number. Say, page 32. If that isn't last try 42, etc... until you get to where you want to be.

Showing the count instead of "many" is the same tech problem as showing the "last" button. Most applications with large databases don't support them because they are very expensive to perform. For example, Gmail will also show you "1-100 of many" without a "last" button.

You can now sort by "oldest" though, which should solve the same problem, except faster and easier ;)
