It has a very specific sound, ripe ones sound deeper than less ripe ones...hard to describe! You almost have to have a tutoring lesson on the sound, that's how I learned, it's an art ;)

I know what you mean. It's so disappointing to cut one and it's either no taste, or taste good but over ripe and mushy. But I've had pretty good luck with the three or four I've gotten so far
