Hiya, I’m a conservative, but I’m also an aviation buff. On airlines, we still eat food on the long haul. The government has no impact on the attractiveness of the flight attendants, and it is not polite to call women ugly. I’ve seen some attractive flight attendants in recent years, so I’m pretty sure nothing has really changed there. I think no smoking in a closed space is good, especially with small children on board. Not having a designated smoking section means more seats, which means more money for the airline companies. I think the FAA is a very necessary organization, and that is how our airline travel is safe and standardized. I will agree with you on the TSA; they do need to back off.

The lousy customer service we have nowadays is the result of deregulation.

Not wrong. The Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 led to cutthroat competition among airlines, and as a result the powerful airlines ate the weak. Now there are fewer airlines who do whatever they want, and passengers get treated like crap.

Not wrong, the lack of competition is what lead to it. Its like saying your cup of coffee will taste better when regulated by the government instead of the deregulated private sector. Airlines for example didn't have smoking sections because of too much regulation, and now bans cigarettes because of no regulations. lol You got it backwards. Give it up!

Uh, no, actually MiniAppleIs has it right. What you fail to understand is that the government regulated airlines back before the 80s. That means price-fixing. Basically it was like mandatory first class. After dereg, which a lot of pilots fought by the way, wrongly in my view, prices fell and travel became affordable for nearly everyone.

The "old" quality of service still exists, but it's in Business and First. You're not entitled to it at the lower prices because you're not paying for it. You want it, pay the higher prices that prevailed back in the 70s.

(I admit I'm personally hostile to pushing it any further like the upright things people have discussed, but I still think '78 was a step forward.)

If on the other hand you're willing to forego the amenities and save yourself a couple hundred bucks or more, I'll see you back in steerage. Happy skies.

Lets be real, the fact that government ban cigarettes and doesn't allow airlines to have smoking and food is government and its monopolized airlines. If I had billions of dollars and wanted to open up my own airline, I can guarantee they won't allow it. Take British-Air and Singapore airlines, why do they have food, smoking and sexy stewardesses that treat you kindly? Because government told them too? lol Sorry, but you are living under a delusion, for we live under an oligarchy that pretends to be competitive, when in reality, its not. Government ban cigarettes, proving government controls it. TSA violates peoples rights, again, proving government is in control. If there was true competition, prices would be even more lower than now, airplanes would offer smoking and non smoking, food or non food, airlines would be trying to blow each other away, in order to get the majority of customers, which they are not. Government/Unions are what ruined airlines despite your delusion of competition.

Oh I'm quite aware of the oligarchy, but you're trying to turn black into white by saying the dropping of intense government regulation was closer to free market than the strong movement away.

The ban on cigarettes has nothing to do with industry pricing which is far more critical. And the old division into "smoking" and "non-smoking was a riduculous obscene joke, we had to all breathe ehs same air.

Government and unions are probably too powerful - but the delusion is yours. Dereg was a step towards freer markets, not away, or else you know nothing about airlines and regulations and markets.

I know I'm old enough to remember when airlines were great, and many people agree with the meme cause they experience the same crapy monopoly government controlled service you seem to defend. There was an airline called LIBERTY, they wanted to have planes for smokers only, but again, the government said NO. It is government that has screwed things up, and if you think things are better now than they were based on some stupid semantics, you sir, are an idiot troll. You just got owned, so accept defeat and free the market! lol

The beauty of it is, I stated my support of the market, and it went in your ear and out the other.

I guess in a way you wrote my reply for me. Good luck struggling with that.

If I had it my way, coach would get first class service and first class would get extra special service, all for lower prices than we see today. You should spend more time fighting for this, instead of arguing with people who point it out.

I should add, your problem should be with monopolies thanks to government protectionism, which lead to no real competition. I remember there was an airline that wanted to allow smoking in their planes, the Federal Government said NO. Deregulation Act of 78 is phony, since the federal government has more power over airlines than they ever had before. If a big company eats up the weaker company, its not because the smaller one charges higher fares, but because the government never protected them with anti-trust laws that supposed to prevent monopolies in the first place.
