According to US law, the proper way to request asylum is to go to a port of entry, not jump the fence, wade across a river, or trudge across a desert to sneak in like a criminal.

They should also be requesting asylum in the first "safe" country they get to, which is MEXICO.

You apparently don't know what the legal definition of a safe country is. Escaping high crime and poverty is not grounds for asylum, but it is motivation to come into a prosperous country.
