I'm speculating here, but I believe as his presidency has gone on, his use (I wouldn't call it reliance) of the text displayed by the teleprompters has increased. His speeches used to be even more rambling and stray from point than they do now, imo.
Regardless, he can't win. When he didn't rely on teleprompters, the left bashed him for freelancing it. When he does rely on teleprompters, the left bashes him for not speaking from the heart.
You see, the left doesn't care what he does, because they're going to bash him regardless.
