We've expanded into a full democracy since then. Turning back the clock to the 1830's isn't really an option.

No, we still have a representative republic- we vote in people who represent us. However, with citizen initiatives and the new tide of giving all electoral votes to whoever wins the most votes, we're getting there.

Right, so in your mind, the only definition of a democracy is where we all essentially have a referendum on every minor issue.

That's a bullshit definition and nobody looks at it that way unless you're using it for your own convenience.
