I am surprised that you and Vagabond didn't chime in with "The slaves were better off," ofr the rest of the racist crap your kind deals out. In case you missed it in your reading of history, the treasonous states fired the first shots. We, the United States of Amreica, whose uniform I proudly wore, and whose Veterans I served for three decades, fired the last ones. Your side lost. No great General I ever read about would lead a grossly undermanned (they had about half the soldiers the United States had) and underarmed force in an underfunded attempt to defend the ownership of one human being by another. No great General I ever heard or read about was so weak that about 12% of his forces deserted in the first years of his campaign. Lee was a hot mess, and is only worshipped because he defended racism. As for seceding, the EU and USA are governed by completely different sets of laws, making comparing them a fool's errand. United States Supreme Court, in Texas v. White, 74 U.S. 700 (1868), determined that secession was unconstitutional. Chief Justice Salmon Chase wrote in his majority opinion that, "The ordinance of secession...and all the acts of legislature intended to give effect to that ordinance, were absolutely null. They were utterly without operation in law." So, under the Constitution that binds us as a nation, secession is illegal.
