I get that. Just seems we only get noticed when bad things happen.

How bad is it? Just the roof and tower? I'm so sick about this.

They say the next hour is crucial. There's 400 firefighters inside and out. The large tower has already collapsed. They're trying to remove artwork and stuff from the inside. I hope they are able to save the relics and tabernacle. That's the most important thing. It's not looking good.

Yet another church casualty in Europe. So many have been torn down or lost in fire the last few decades.

It's amazing how structures built 500-1000 years ago are more beautiful then what is built today :(

Right? No cranes or cement mixers or computers. Just their love for God, generous hearts and determination to get it done even if it took 2 centuries.

Yes, it was quality over quantity, unlike today. They just discovered the way the Romans were able to make such strong concrete in the last few years. Not to mention an engineering marvel like the great pyramid. It's our hubris today that makes most think we are so much better today then ever in the past. And like you said, it was a loving tribute to their God. Imagine having a Michelangelo painting the ceilings of structures today. Look at what passes for music now as compared to a Mozart, Tchaikovsky or Bach. Or even the great Italians that built beautiful churches after coming to America. I ever tell you about Italian stone masons or concrete workers?

And by poor people practically with their bare hands. It's named after the Virgin Mary.

The sheer effort and architecture that went into these beautiful buildings is something to behold. Complete destruction would have been a travesty. At least it seems, we don’t have to witness that.

They say it took 100 years total to build. They took their time. Now everything is rushed. All about the bottom line these days.

5 years to rebuild? Hope they don't turn it into one of these awfully ugly modernist interpretations of a church you see nowadays.
