The right being protected is that of the people, not a Federal/State militia like DJFox is implying.

In defense of the State being the purpose though as stated, the State itself being the people as well.

This argument regarding the 2nd's use of the language "militia" was settled in the Heller case by SCOTUS. It affirms the right the individual to bear arms.

You're correct.  The militia is the people, back then defined as able-bodied males capable of using arms.  Supreme court decisions have for that reason always upheld that point.  



It's an individual right as clearly as any other in the bill of rights from free speech to peaceable assembly to any other.  Only the illiterate don't get this.
