So true. Electoral College works well. Has benefited all parties.

The electoral college vote and the popular vote have differed 5 times.

The first time was in 1824, in which all of the people running were Democratic Republicans. Andrew Jackson, who won the popular vote but came second in the electoral college, started the Democratic Party in protest of what he called a "corrupt bargain" that placed John Quincy Adams in the presidency.

The other four (1876, 1888, 2000, and 2016) all placed Republicans in the presidency while Democrats earned the popular vote.

But sure, it benefits all parties.

Correction: Jackson did indeed have the most electoral votes with Adams second, but since he didn't have enough for the required majority, the decision went to the House of Representatives, who elected Adams.

Oops.

You're only looking at the irrelevant outliers where the popular vote differed... My point is that it's fair for all parties and they all benefit by winning some of the races. The results are not skewed toward any one party, but toward making the election completely fair at the state level (where it belongs).

Contrary to modern thinking, we're still a united group of independent sovereign states. Each state is NOT a subunit of the country. The country is a collective of states. HUGE important distinction.

. | A REPUBLICAN HAS WON THE PRESIDENCY VIA THE POPULAR VOTE 1 TIME IN THE LAST 3 DECADES THE REST YOU SAID IS CORRECT. THAT'S WHY STATES ELECT | image tagged in g-man from half-life | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
Not fair at any level. The Electoral College is a winner take all in all but 2 States, meaning within each State the winning candidate is awarded the votes the other candates had won, in effect nulling those votes.

Add to that redistricting, and the Electoral College is UNFAIR at the State and local level, contradicting the argument those in support use since the choice and voice of those not in the majority is silenced.

The USA basically ceased being a federation of sovereign states after the end on the Civil War. Expansion of big goverment to reduce resistance, placate the masses who feel lesser than more prominent and important States, and fund the now terminally moribund economies of a slave deprived South was felt to be a necessity. That's when we started calling ourselves Americans instead of Virginians and New Yorkers, etc.

When I hear a Republican complain about the popular vote, my mind hears "we're insecure about how convincing our arguments really are."

"No. You corrected nothing."

You've (again) had something explained to you and you just keep being obtuse. No help for you when you're deliberately wallowing in your ignorance.

No idea what your nonsense is as always. I left out a "NOT" I corrected it. You whined about it some more. As usual you have no valid argument, just inane insults.

Pretending you said it when you did not is not correcting it.
1. It's lying.
2. It just adds more to the stupid.

We are a constitutional republic not a democracy. The electoral college evens out, without it we would have only major cities determining the outcome of elections with a large majority of the country being left out. Being butt hurt over the Arkansas Shrew's loss is not justification to make changes. Funny how it's ok when the left wins, what if the outcome where different....yeah, thought so.

I don't know how I'd react. The electoral college hasn't overruled a Republican's win of the popular vote in my lifetime. Just Democrats.

I'd like to think I'd still be calling for a system that better represents the popular vote.

The thing that throws it out of whack is the two electoral votes every state gets in addition to the vote for each congressional district. The five northern states west of Minnesota (the Dakotas, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming) have a combined population barely half of Minnesota's. But they get a total of 15 electoral votes to Minnesota's 10.

The cities have the most people affected by government, so they should have the major role in determining the outcome of elections.

Agree. One person, one vote. That's equality.

And that's how it works. One person, one vote... Within each state and the majority / popular vote within that state wins that state's slate of electors. A perfect system.
2 ups, 5y
Hardly perfect when within all states except 2, winner takes all, muting the vote of those not in the majority.
The system is hypocritical, bogus, corrupt, and outdated.
