many conservatives use adam smiths book "wealth of nations" and point to a passage "the invisible hand of the market" but they rarely go any further.if you read further,smith was making the argument that big business would have a certain loyalty to the community,that community and a sense of solidarity,therefore that "invisible hand" would influence big companies to not betray their fellow man.
but multi-national corporations hold no allegiance or loyalty.
so while "buy American" is a fine colloquialism,it has not punch in the real world.
because America went from a manufacturing economy to a financial one in the late 70's.
we do produce many things,but those tend to be in tech and big agro.
we import almost everything in regards to consumer goods.
pandoras box was opened decades ago,and we are never getting that genie back into the bottle.
we must adapt,and create new avenues of manufacturing.
because,compared to other developed countries,we are getting dusted.
