There were two militias backing the Nazis, the SS and the SA, and they kind of rivaled each other. While the purge was ultimately Hitler's decision, Himmler of the SS had been vying to take the SA out of the picture for a long time.

True. The SS was originally subordinate to tbe SA, but all tbat changed under Himmler. They were loyal to Hitler, while the SA became more questionable with time. Eventually SS took over SA functions, leaving SA with little more than street-gang activity. Röhm also wanted nationalization of industry on a much larger scale than Hitler.
