This explains it all! I KNEW that my family's rotten luck was somehow linked to past misdeeds! BTW,Bad Luck Brian really IS unlucky-more than you know!
The gene mutation that causes red hair sets you up for skin cancer risk. It can also make you unresponsive to local & general anesthetics.Redheads need about 20% more anesthetic. Some redheads & other carriers of the ginger gene(MC1r) have woken up during surgery! Our pain thresholds are different as well. Some of us were childhood gingers-had red hair as kids, but it darkened later. What never changes is the sun sensitivity.
If you have an insensitivity to lidocaine, but are not a visible redhead, you may have gotten a MC1r gene, which is active but not expressed in your haircoloring. About 40% of Celts carry this gene. It's also known that people of Celtic & Germanic origin have notoriously sensitive mouths & gums;combine that with the MC1r gene,& it explans for why many British folks are afflicted with poor teeth, despite a decent national healthcare program. Mike Myers lampooned this stereotype cruelly in his Austin Powers character. It's NOT for lack of conscientious hygiene;it's from abject fear that some of us shy away from dentistry. You would too if you were MC1r!
So poor Brian, with his red hair, freckles,& braces, really DOES have bad luck!
