We really ARE incredibly lucky! Did you ever watch Current network before it became Al Jazeera? There was a documentary on that network that discussed how poor sanitation was in other countries; The interviewer, a young Asian man, became physically ill whilst doing the show. The poor fellow excused himself, vomiting helplessly off screen after he was overcome with nausea when assaulted by the aroma of the village privy-which didn't deserve such a dignified designation-it was a bayou flat at low tide.
Another village had a footbridge over a stream. One simply did the deed whilst holding onto a railing, dropping it into the water, which no doubt gave the villagers downstream dysentery, hepatitis, & helminths-no wonder parasitic infections are so common in 3rd world countries!
There some encouraging signs-one lady was celebrating having built the very 1st septic tank in her village. She was part of a group of women who taught others about the importance of hygiene.
We really do have lives of luxury compared to people in other countries. I remember being told as a young child that the United States has 80% of the worlds toilets! I believe it after watching that documentary.
