No, we should stop trying to pretend they have any legitimacy, and demand unconditional surrender!

They won't surrender, and without a full blown invasion of Pakistan(who is technically our ally) there is no way we can defeat them. They are based in territory we aren't allowed to attack. They've lost more blood than we did on 9/11 tenfold, and it is time for us to come home. There's kids graduating high school now getting ready to join up that weren't even born when we first invaded. Many of them have parents who've already served in Afghanistan. Unless we're willing to invade an ally and completely destroy our international credibility and lose our honor as a nation, there is no victory to be had beyond an honorable withdrawal. Get as many concessions from the Taliban as we can, do what we can to prepare the Afgan government for the shitstorm that is coming, and let them deal with their own backyard. The taliban were there before we were, but now at least the people have another option. If they aren't willing to fight for it themselves then they deserve to lose it.

We do that, and they'll return the country to the jihadist dictatorship it was before, which also protected Al-Qaeda so they can get away with carrying out more terrorist attacks, perhaps worse than 9/11. Knowing this, withdrawal from the region is not honorable to say the least, and let's face it, you can't base this issue on "honor" to begin with. If it takes covert ops in Pakistan to defeat them, then so be it. If Pakistan isn't willing to take action against them, they they're the one who should lose international credibility. But throwing up our hands and taking off has proven to lead to nothing but disaster.

Covert ops into Pakistan is not going to defeat an army tens of thousands strong. It doesn't make a difference at all who "should" lose international credibility, the fact is this has been going on for nearly two decades now and still nobody has done anything about the situation or really called the pakistanis out on it. So your solution is what, then? They will not accept unconditional surrender and we can't put them in a position where they are forced to. What options are left?

Actually it's the only thing that would stop them. Killing the Taliban both in Afghanistan and Pakistan is the only way to stop them.

Covert ops isn't going to defeat the Taliban in Pakistan, just chip away at them at a slower rate than they'll recruit new blood. The only way we could do what you're suggesting is a major military incursion into Pakistan which we can't do without igniting ANOTHER war. I actually agree with you on fighting them in Pakistan being the only way to stop the Taliban, however it is an option we don't really have. Since Pakistan is our "ally" but won't let us into their territory the only options left are to violate their sovereignty, continue to fight a never ending war in Afghanistan, or pull out and wash our hands of the whole convoluted mess
