Thanksgiving Is About To Trigger Some People!

Enjoy your family, take a moment to be thankful for your blessings, and avoid shopping centers at all costs. Happy Thanksgiving.

My point is that a knowledge of the ugly parts of their specific history (which is a part of our history as a nation) shouldn't change the point of Thanksgiving.

The trap is that these acts weren’t committed by “the settlers” or “the pilgrims”. Individuals are responsible for their own actions. It can shine light on society and attitudes at the time, but moral responsibility does not extend past the people who committed/encouraged/ignored these acts. It is more important to learn the lessons of history than to self righteously (not talking about you) condemn people who died hundreds of years ago.

Individuals are more likely to commit atrocious deeds if their society does not actively discourage them.

Does living in a society that turns a blind eye to racism acquit the person who chooses to set fire to a bus full of black people? Absolutely not! That person is still a monster, a murderer, a terrorist. That person deserves an appropriate punishment for his/her crime, and absolutely no less.

The fact that that individual is responsible for their own individual actions, however, does not acquit the society that created conditions favorable to those actions.
